Must Have Summer Hairstyles

Summer is in full swing, and that means temperatures are rising. It has been pretty hot here in Los Angeles over the past few weeks, which means I am changing up my usual hairstyles to get my hair up and out of my face. I can't stand being in really hot weather, feeling like my hair is all over me, making me sweat! I love rocking effortless updo's during the summer, which are so chic and in right now. Check out my 5 favorite summer hairstyles below for some hot whether inspiration!

1. Messy Bun Updo

This is my favorite way to wear my hair on a hot day! It takes me just a few minutes to style, and looks super cute for day or night.

How to achieve this look:

  1. Start by parting hair down the middle and secure in a loose, low ponytail. I like to wrap the hair tie around only two times to maintain an effortless, loose look.
  2. Section your hair in the pony tail into 3 equal parts, as though you were going to braid it.
  3. Take one of the outside sections and begin to wrap it around your hair tie to make the first part of your bun. Secure the hair with bobby pins so that it stays in place.
  4. Take the opposite outer section of hair and repeat the above step, except this time, you will wrap the hair going in the opposite direction. Secure with bobby pins.
  5. Take the last strand of hair and wrap, going the same way that you originally started with. Secure this last section with bobby pins.
  6. You may need to take a few extra pins to make adjustments to your bun, pulling it higher up if necessary.
  7. At this point, you may have some small pieces of hair sticking out of the bun if your hair is layered. Keep these pieces loose. If your entire bun is secure, pull a few small pieces out for an effortless look.
  8. With a fishtail comb, loosen the front of your hair by running the tail under the hair and pulling up gently. Pull out a few front pieces of hair to frame your face, which may have already fallen if you have bangs or short layers in the front.
  9. Give your hair a quick spritz of hairspray to fix any flyaways or frizz and you are good to go!

2. The Topknot

Topknots have been all the rage lately, and for good reason, they are super chic, and easy to achieve at the same time. I especially like to wear this style on day-old, curled hair.

How to achieve this look:

  1. Take a 2-3 inch section from the front, middle of your hair, going backwards to the crown, and gather it into a loose ponytail with a small hair tie.
  2. Take a teasing comb and begin to tease the hair in the ponytail to give the hair more volume and texture.
  3. Begin to wrap the ponytail around the hair tie, securing it with bobby pins as you go around.
  4. You may need to take a few extra pins at this point and shape the knot the way you like it.
  5. For the remainder of your hair, take a texturizing product and work it into the ends of your hair to give it a beachy, messy look. I like to use Garnier Pixie Play, which leaves my hair messy, without being overly stiff or sticky.

3. Mini French Braids

I love this style because it is so fun and playful, plus it keeps my hair out of my face!

How to achieve this look:

  1. Start by parting hair down the middle, with a fishtail comb.

  2. Take a 1 inch section of hair, right at the middle part, and begin to french braid it straight back, towards your crown. (This style also looks great with regular braids as well).

  3. Continue braiding about 1 inch past the crown, towards the back of your head, and secure the braid with two bobby pins, crossed over each other for extra strength.
  4. Repeat this step with the opposite side of the part.
  5. For the remainder of your hair, take a texturizing product and work it into the ends of your hair to give it a beachy, messy look. I like to use Garnier Pixie Play, which leaves my hair messy, without being overly stiff or sticky.

4. Side Bun with Braid

This romantic style is perfect for a summer evening out, worn with a flowy dress.

How to achieve this look:

  1. Begin by parting hair down the middle with a fishtail comb.
  2. Lightly tease the roots of hair on both sides of the part for added body.
  3. Take a 1 inch section of hair on the left or right, depending on how you parted your hair, and begin to braid all the way to the ends. Secure the braid towards the back of your head with two bobby pins.
  4. Gather all of your hair in a low, side pony tail on whichever side you parted your hair (this should be the same side that the braid is on. Keep the hair tie loose.
  5. Section your hair in the pony tail into 3 equal parts, as though you were going to braid it.
  6. Take one of the outside sections and begin to wrap it around your hair tie to make the first part of your bun. Secure the hair with bobby pins so that it stays in place.
  7. Take the opposite outer section of hair and repeat the above step, except this time, you will wrap the hair going in the opposite direction. Secure with bobby pins.
  8. Take the last strand of hair and wrap, going the same way that you originally started with. Secure this last section with bobby pins
  9. Depending on how your bun looks, secure with additional pins to shape it nicely.
  10. Allow small pieces of hair to effortlessly fall out of the bun for a soft and romantic feel.
  11. With the fishtail comb, loosen the top of your hair, pulling out a few pieces to frame the face if desired.

5. Twist Backs

This bohemian inspired style is perfect for both day and night, and can be worn dressed up or down.

How to achieve this look:

  1. Begin by parting hair down the middle with a fishtail comb.
  2.  Take a 1 inch section at the top of the head, next to the part, twisting backward towards the back of the head.
  3. Once you have reached the back of your head, secure the twist with 2 bobby pins, crisscrossed.
  4. Repeat these steps for the other side of your part.
  5. You may choose to add two additional pins at this point, or use the original two pins to secure both twists together, which gives the style a cleaner look.
  6. For the remainder of your hair, take a texturizing product and work it into the ends of your hair to give it a beachy, messy look. I like to use Garnier Pixie Play, which leaves my hair messy, without being overly stiff or sticky.
