I have been doing a lot of research lately on home design, as my fiance and I plan on buying our first home soon after we are married. One trend that I keep seeing pop up is the retro bar cart. Perfect for a dinner party with friend, the stylized bar cart can work as a conversational piece or ice breaker for guests, and acts as the perfect setting to showcase your personal style. Not only does the bar cart work as a functional storage piece, but it also serves as a very trendy decor item for your home. In order to get you started on this super hot trend, I put together a list of essentials that you will need. Check out my how-to guide below and get ready to start entertaining!

STEP ONE: Pick a theme for your bar cart
Whether you want a vintage look, or something super modern and sleek, figure out what your personal style is, and make sure to stick to this theme when selecting your cart and the items to fill it. Your theme should also coordinate with the decor in whatever room you plan on storing the cart in.

STEP TWO: Buy your glassware
Now that you've selected your decor theme for your cart, you can start shopping for stylish glassware that will compliment the look. Consider investing in high quality glasses, as they will be a major focus as part of your bar cart display. Think about what type of drinks you and your friends enjoy most often when making your selections. There's no point in getting a cute martini glass set if you and your friends only drink wine.

STEP THREE: Buy your tools
In order to make delicious drinks that will wow your guests, you've got to have the right tools. Stock up on all the essentials to make basic drinks, and then work on building up your collection of specialty items based on what you like. You'll need tools like a bottle opener, jigger, shaker, ice buck and tongs to get you started.

STEP FOUR: Stock up on liquor
Of course you won't have much of a bar cart without the bar. Make sure to get all the basics so you'll be prepared for whatever drink orders that may come your way. Some of the different selections for basic drinks include vodka, gin, rum, tequila, and whiskey. Feel free to add a few bottles of wine to your cart as well, just make sure that you drink them within a few months as upright storage in the wrong temperature isn't ideal for the wine.

STEP FIVE: Select your extras
Now it's time to get all the little extras that make your cart unique and represent your personality. This can include decorative items, flowers, candles, and garnishments. You might consider picking an overall color and buying all of your items to match.

STEP SIX: Put it all together!
Now that you have all the components for the perfect bar cart, it's time to put it all together. When styling your cart, remember that it's not always necessary to have every piece of your bar on the cart. Try different combinations of items to find the right fit for your room and theme. You may want to try a more minimalist approach with a super clean cart, or you may prefer to show off your collection of bar-ware, it's all up to you and your style!

TIPS

  • Consider buying glasses with metallic elements or an interesting texture.
  • Decorate the space around the cart. Try hanging some complimentary artwork above the cart, or store it near a brightly colored accent wall.
  • Add fresh flowers or lemons for a pop of color.
  • For an ultra clean look, only have a few of your favorite liquors on the cart, and store them in an elegant decanter.

What do you think of the bar cart trend? Is it something you'd have in your home? Have you tried it out for yourself? I'd love to hear your thoughts! Share with me in the comments below!
