Whiter Teeth for Less Than $5!

Whiter Teeth for Less Than $5!

We all know that one of the key factors to having a beautiful smile is having white, bright teeth. For most of us, it takes a little bit of work to get our smile to the optimal brightness. It doesn't have to take hundreds of dollars at your dentist's office, or expensive store bought whitening strips, there are plenty of at home remedies for you to achieve a beautiful white smile.

Oil Pulling

I'm sure you've heard all about oil pulling from social media over the past few months. This has become a very popular method of at home whitening. I decided to give this a try and see what all the hype is about. I researched online to compare pricing of a popular coconut oil treatment that is specifically made for oil pulling, versus buying pure coconut oil at the grocery store. The oil pulling product was around $30 for a two week supply, not including shipping and the store bought oil was $5.99 for a month supply! What's the difference between the two products? The special oil pulling product also contains a flavoring, whereas the store bought oil is just plain oil. I would recommend trying the plain oil at first, and if you still can't stand the taste, use an essential oil such as peppermint, spearmint, lemon, or vanilla in your oil to make it more pleasant. The essential oil should cost you less than $10, and will last you a very long time, as you'll only need to use a few drops (plus you can use the essential oils for other at home treatments too! Check out this article here!).

How to:

Take 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to start. If using an essential oil, add one drop to the oil while it is still in your measuring spoon. Place the oil in your mouth, allowing it to melt (coconut oil is solid at room temperature). Gently swish the oil in your mouth for 20 minutes. If you mouth starts to feel sore, swish more slowly. If you are having trouble keeping the oil in your mouth, or feel like you keep swallowing it, you might be using too much oil. Everyone's mouth size is different, so try using a little less oil next time until you reach an amount that's comfortable for you. After the 20 minutes is over, spit out the oil into a trash can, not the sink, which may clog. Rinse your mouth with warm water and follow with brushing.

I started seeing results the first day! I noticed that my teeth felt very smooth and looked shiny! By day two, I noticed that stains were starting to lift away and my teeth looked significantly whiter. I continued this treatment every day for two weeks and by the end my teeth were incredibly white! I am so glad to have discovered this technique which ended up costing me about $3! It has now been about a month since I last oil pulled and I still have very white teeth! yay!!!

Maintaining your pearly whites:

Make sure to take care of your teeth properly after any whitening treatment. Here are a few of my tips that I use to maintain my hard work!

  1. Use an electric tooth brush. I've been using the Oral B Electric Toothbrush for about a year now and I absolutely love it. It does a great job at cleaning my teeth and helps to lift away stains and maintain my whitening treatments.
  2. Drink through a straw. I try to drink all dark fluids through a straw when possible. With the exception of red wine (I might even try this if no one is looking), I drink everything through a straw, even my coffee. This helps to prevent the liquid from getting on my teeth and staining them.
  3. Rinse after drinking. Even when drinking through a straw, I still like to rinse my mouth after drinking dark liquids like coffee. If you can, avoid dark liquids all together!

I hope you found these tips helpful and you are able to give oil pulling a try!
