Why Your Foundation Isn't Lasting All Day
Ever wonder why your makeup just doesn't seem to last you all day, even when you're following all the right steps? You prep and prime and set, and yet, by 4:00 PM, your foundation has cracked, and is beginning to migrate down your face. So what's the big deal? Are you putting it on wrong? Well, the solution to this problem might be more simple than you'd think, but not everyone knows about it.
What's in your primer?
There are two basic categories of primers; silicone based, and water based. If you're not sure which one you have, you can find out by either Googling it (probably the easiest way), or by reading the ingredients label. A silicone based primer will have ingredients the end in -siloxane and -cone towards the top of the list.
Most primers will list water at the top of their ingredient list, but that doesn't mean it is water based, it just means that because it's a liquid product, it needs water to have the right consistency. A lot of silicone based primers will mention things like "poreless", "smoothing", "silky" and "filling" in the name or description. Whenever you're in doubt, simply look up the primer online and you'll find out what it's base is.
Which foundation to choose
Now that you have figured out what the base of your primer is, it's time to find it's perfect foundation match. Although it's not always the case, in general, water based primers work best with water based foundations, and silicone based primers work best with silicone based foundations. There are some exceptions to this rule, but to keep things simple, try to match up your foundation and primer with the same base ingredient. By doing this, you will have a lot more success at achieving all-day makeup, since the ingredients work well together and don't cause cracking or separation.
Primer may seem like just one extra step in your routine that's totally unnecessarily, but it really does help to keep your makeup looking amazing all day, not to mention giving your foundation a smooth surface to hold onto.
